Provide a home for native reptiles

Birds, frogs, butterflies, possums, and cute critters are synonymous with home gardens. Yet, lizards and other reptiles are too often forgotten when it comes to providing urban habitat.

Safe Shelter

Lizards play a critical role in the ecosystem and remain undervalued in the home garden.

For example, bobtail lizards disperse seeds of native plants and geckos control mosquitos.

Urban areas are not safe for reptiles. Lizards in particular are at significant risk to habitat loss and predation by cats and dogs.

Let's find a place for our lizard neighbours.

Birds, frogs, butterflies, possums, and critters are synonymous with home gardens. Yet, lizards and other reptiles are too often forgotten when it comes to providing urban habitat.

Habitat Value: Level 3

Provide a home for reptiles is a fairly high value ReWild action and lizards will establish habitat boxes quickly.

Including smart water features and foraging habitat including clumping grasses and dense shrubs to encourage the use of these boxes.

The Level 3 habitat value reflects the importance of reintroducing shelter and refuge to native species. This is central to the ReWild purpose.

Lizards are susceptible to predation by cats and dogs and require large logs and rocky areas to hide. These are largely absent from home gardens, but most reptiles will use a substitute home (called ‘novel habitats’) if they’re available.

Pet Ownership

Novel habitats need to be placed carefully with regard to our pets.

If you think a cat can access a habitat, it can and will.

Consider this carefully before introducing any habitats for lizards.

Reptile Habitat Templates

Our gardens can provide safe havens for native lizards and habitat boxes shown below make suitable hiding places.

We have included nesting box designs in the ‘Habitat’ section of our animal resources – check out the Bobtail page for an example.

Lizards shelter in areas inaccessible to other animals. Place the box under dense shrubs and amongst clumping grasses, the pricklier the better.
