Anyone can ReWild! This site is designed for residents in the Greater Perth region, including a limited area around Mandurah. However, the resources we have collected are accessible to everyone.
Absolutely! When it comes to ReWild Perth, something is always better than nothing! A small garden full of potted plants can still enhance biodiversity. With the right design, your balcony can be both attractive to you and a wide array of birds and pollinators. You will be surprised how high a butterfly can flutter, a frog can climb, or a bird will fly in search of food, water or shelter!
Can I ReWild while Renting?
Yes! If you’re not in your forever home, you can make your ReWild garden portable! Many native plant species are quite versatile and can adapt to potted life. No matter where you live, these potted plants or habitats will become havens for local birds, native bees, and butterflies. The only important criteria is that potted plants must be outside, where they can interact with nature. While indoor plants are great for people, they are for us, not wildlife.
Can I ReWild a Newly Built Home?
New developments are the frontier of biodiversity loss. The sooner you start ReWilding, the better your success in providing important habitat for local wildlife. Find out what kind of plants have been removed from your area, and make them the centre-piece of an eye-catching, biodiversity enhancing garden.
Best of all, the plants that originally grew in your area are the ones that evolved to live without help from you, so they’ll be easier to maintain and require less watering once established.
Use ReWild Perth for plant selections and see what kind of animals and critters you might attract.
Can I ReWild my Business Premise?
Sure! If your business has a garden or outdoor area, you can certainly turn it into a ReWild site and show your commitment to our unique environment. Even better, creating a ReWild garden can be a great team-building exercise and a wonderful place to relax for your staff.
If you have the space, make a ReWild place.
Can I ReWild a School?
The ReWild Perth program is designed for residential spaces, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a great ReWild space at your school. We recommend starting with one specific area, and then adding multiple sites/gardens on the school grounds over time.
You can create different gardens for different departments, or year groups – whatever works best for your school. This will also allow students to see different approaches and methods for creating habitat (perhaps with different target species – think ‘pollinator’ or ‘frog-friendly’ ReWild garden) and strengthen their understanding of how ecosystems work.
Nature is a great teacher, and ReWild gardens are a great place for practical and fun engagement with ideas and principles from your curriculum.
ReWilding is also a creative and imaginative experience as young people can create a unique sense of place for themselves and local wildlife. Seeing wildlife return in the local community shows kids a new normal for living in an urban area.
Can I ReWild a Park or Reserve?
While the short answer is yes; parks and reserves often offer larger spaces and opportunities to restore natural ecosystems, Indeed, many beaches, parks and reserves are maintained in collaboration with the landowners (typically the Local Government) and a “Friends Group” or other volunteer / community organisations to this end.
The long answer is that while our resources might be useful, our ReWild website and scoring system is designed for residential properties and this version may not be suitable for public spaces.
However, we highly recommend joining your local volunteer organisation. This important ‘behaviour change’ action increases your positive environmental impact, and improves your residential ReWild site score. Find more info on:
